Behind the Painting

I nearly painted over this piece.

The darker foundation initially felt at odds with the light I wanted the painting to hold. Instead of covering it, I decided to let the background do its work. I began building translucent passages over it, allowing the darkness to remain visible beneath areas of blue, green, and light.

That decision changed the painting. What I had wanted to eliminate became part of what gave the surface its depth.

Even the final orientation came through looking rather than planning. When I turned the painting vertically, everything seemed to settle into place.

What Lies Beneath became a reminder that sometimes the part I am resisting is exactly what the painting needs.
