Behind the Painting

Before the Light Breaks grew out of a period of study and experimentation with color, movement, and atmosphere. I had been working with a more limited palette, exploring how subtle shifts in color and value could create depth and emotion without relying on a recognizable landscape.

As the painting developed, I added the yellow as a focal point—a place for the eye to settle within the darker blues. It was a compositional decision, but when I stepped back and looked at the finished piece, it began to suggest something more.

The deep blues seemed to surround the light, while the yellow felt as though it were beginning to push its way through. The painting captured that suspended moment when darkness is still present, but you sense that it won't remain that way.

That feeling gave the painting its title: Before the Light Breaks.
