Held In Between

Held In Between began with color and movement. I wanted to work with a more vibrant palette, especially the red, and I was drawn to the fluidity that developed as the edges of the colors began to blend and move into one another.

As the painting evolved, I began to see the quieter earth-toned area near the center being pressed from different directions by the stronger colors surrounding it. The white became something different—a place of openness and rest within all that movement.

Looking back, that sense of being held between reflected where I was in my own life. Retirement had brought questions about finances, how I wanted to engage with others, and what this new stage of my life would become. I was no longer where I had been, but I hadn't completely found where I was going either. Held In Between captures that suspended place—the pressures surrounding me, the uncertainty of transition, and the need to find somewhere within it all to rest.
