Softly

Softly began with an underpainting I simply didn't like. Rather than abandon it, I began covering it with a veil of white, allowing traces of the original colors and marks to remain visible beneath the surface. Almost by chance, I left a small area uncovered because I was drawn to the contrast between the stronger color and the softness surrounding it.
 

The effect immediately appealed to me. The veil transformed the painting, creating depth and atmosphere while allowing hints of what came before to quietly emerge. I loved the mystery of seeing something without having it completely revealed.
 

Softly became an unexpected discovery. What began as an attempt to resolve a painting opened the door to a visual language of veiling, layering and atmosphere—qualities that would continue to find their way into my work.
