Behind the Painting

First Light grew from a small 6 × 6 study titled Where Light Remains. I wanted to revisit the idea on a larger scale, reimagining the horizon and foreground to create a greater sense of depth and distance while still allowing the landscape to remain abstract.

As the painting developed, I added the small yellow sun as a focal point. Against the darker horizon and softer blues surrounding it, that single point of light seemed to carry far more presence than its size would suggest.

The painting became less about a specific place and more about the experience of seeing that first light in the distance—the moment when something small can change the way you see everything around it.
