Behind the Painting

This painting grew out of my experiments with translucency and layered color, but ultimately I found the painting when I stopped trying to control the process and allowed myself to work more intuitively.

I became interested in the way the darker forms seemed to surround and direct the light rather than simply contrast with it. Thin passages of color overlap and dissolve into one another, allowing some forms to remain visible while others seem to disappear beneath the surface.

As the painting developed, I began to see a landscape without having intentionally painted one—a suggestion of water, distant land and an illuminated atmosphere. I chose to leave those elements unresolved. For me, the painting is less about a particular place than the experience of watching light gather, shift and briefly reveal what had been hidden.
