Emergence

Emergence grew from a period of experimentation with color, layering, and movement. I was interested in allowing the layers to interact rather than controlling exactly where the painting would lead.

I introduced the yellow as a contrast to the softer blues and grays. As the painting developed, those brighter passages began to feel as though they were coming through the layers rather than simply sitting on the surface.

That sense of something gradually making its way forward gave the painting its title. Emergence became about the moment when what has been developing beneath the surface finally begins to reveal itself.
